It’s been a fun and busy few weeks in Second Class! The children have been engaged in hands-on learning across science, nature, and maths.
🦴 Science Focus: Skeletons & How Our Bodies Work
We’ve been exploring the amazing human body and learning all about our skeletons. The children discovered:
- Our bones give us shape and protect our important organs.
- We have 206 bones in our bodies when we are adults!
- Bones work with our muscles to help us move.
The highlight was definitely creating our own life-size skeleton models, they look great hanging in our classroom!

🎢 Geography focus: Jobs in our locality
The children worked together in small groups to research Emerald Park. They explored its history, attractions, and wildlife. Each group then planned and created a project to show what they had learned. Through teamwork, communication and creativity, they presented their findings in a fun and engaging way.

🍂 Nature Adventures
We took a look at autumn weather and all the changes to our surroundings during autumn. The children used their senses to:
- Collect colourful leaves, helicopters, and conkers.
- Listen for different birds and sounds.
- Spot various types of trees, animals and learn about hibernation.
- Print leaves using Andy Warhol’s ‘pop art’ technique.
It was wonderful to see their curiosity about the local environment!

🔢 Making Maths Fun for Maths Week!
We celebrated Maths Week with lots of exciting, hands-on activities. The focus was on making maths interactive and collaborative.
- Maths Trails: We solved sums hidden around the schoolyard.
- Board Games: We used dice and card games to practice counting and strategy skills.
- Estimating Station: Here we had to estimate with a wide variety of items. Our favourites were where we guessed how many sweets were in a jar, how many pasta shells were in the container and which pumpkin was the heaviest.
- The children had a brilliant time and learned that maths can be found all around us, not just in textbooks.
