These last few months we have been learning about a broad range of subjects. We learned about many interesting topics and we would like to tell you all about them!
We have been very busy learning about long division, angles, turns and how to strategically plan a budget. We learned two ways to do long division: the traditional method and one where you had to partition. We learned about straight angles, right angles, acute angles, reflex angles and obtuse angles.
In English, we have been reading a novel titled ‘Under the Hawthorn Tree’. It shows the grim time during the Great Irish Famine. It has made everyone very emotional and aware of the tragic time in Irish history. We have also been learning about predators; we learned that certain predators even eat their own kind! After that, we made projects about them on the Chromebooks.
In S.E.S.E., we have been learning about the launch of Artemis II. We made projects all about the four astronauts on board the ship. When we were full of information about Artemis II, we decided to make a spaceship of our own. When we built our spaceships, we put our eggs (astronauts) in them, then we dropped them off the staircase. Most of them survived, but we did have some casualties. Everyone had to think strategically and work together so it would work out.
P.E. has also been packed with excitement! We have been learning how to sprint properly. We found out that we had to tuck in our arms, look forward and keep our legs at a 90-degree angle. We have also been learning football skills with Marcel. We have been enjoying it; however, there were a few injuries!
Drama has been thrilling. We were making a script about the novel we have been reading, Under the Hawthorn Tree, in groups that we were assigned. We have been practising for about a month; however, we will be reciting it in front of the class in the next few days. :]
For music, we had TY students from Coláiste De Lacy. The students helped us learn how to play the djembe, ukulele and percussion. We learned a few songs on the ukulele and practised chords on them. We also played fun quizzes with the TY students. Our whole class gradually learned how to play each of those instruments and we found out about lots of types of traditional instruments. After De Lacy gave us a few wonderful music lessons, they also surprised us with the arrival of an ice cream truck! Everyone from the class was delighted and very grateful.
A few days before this, we went and watched the boys’ GAA match semi-final. It was an intense game and the other team turned out to be tougher than we thought. By half-time we were eleven points down, but the team didn’t give up; however, one of our players got badly injured (they were unable to continue playing, but thankfully, the injury was nothing serious). In the end, we lost the match, but there is always a chance next year.
More recently, we enjoyed learning all about France. We learned about French geography, French history (The French Revolution) and French culture, and we had a wonderful time taste-testing French food. The madeleines were the most liked. Although the blue cheese smelt pungent, most of us tried it and some children even liked it!
