We had a very busy and fun January in Niamh’s 1st class. We have been learning all about animals in Antarctica such as the emperor penguin. We read books about penguins, we researched information on our iPads, we learned a song and dance called ‘funky penguins’, and we even made penguins in Art. Have a look at our funky penguins below. We also did a cool science experiment. We got to experiment with ice and butter to see what it would feel like to have a penguin’s blubber. Let’s just say penguins can stay a lot warmer than we can in icy water! Brrrrr…

We also had lots of fun learning all about the famous Irish explorer Tom Crean. We learned lots of interesting facts about him. We worked in groups and we created amazing projects. You can see our projects below.

On the 29th of January we celebrated the Chinese New Year. It is the year of the snake. We read a story about the different zodiac animals, we learned about Chinese traditions and we found out that the children in our class who were born in 2017 are the year of the rooster and children born in 2018 are the year of the dog. We had lots of fun learning about the Chinese New Year. We also made snakes with playdough and we made some cool puppets. Happy Chinese New Year from Niamh’s 1st class! 新年快乐
