Recently 5th class have been learning about the Great Famine in Ireland which took place during the mid 19th Century. The children generated their own questions to find out about what caused the famine, what it was like during the famine and what the impact of the famine was on the people of Ireland. The children researched their questions and presented their research to their class.

During our English lessons, we read “Under the Hawthorn Tree” by Marita Conlon McKenna. This gave the children a fantastic insight into what life was like in Ireland during the Great Famine. We wrote book reviews and most of us would definitely recommend this book to others – but be warned , you might need tissues to hand!

Cycle Safety in 5th Class
Fifth class had the opportunity to participate in cycle Safety lessons. An external coach visited the school weekly for 6 weeks. We learned: cycle safety , road safety , bike checks, bike control (slow races) , how to go and stop (front and back brakes), free wheeling, turning left and right on the road , signalling and observation (looking over their shoulder) . It was amazing to see the progress the children made in such a short period of time.
